Polyphemus
by Blue Myers
Dandelion heads (Taraxacum officinale) rise on deep blue stems against a warm cream ground, their disc florets rendered in gold and ochre where watercolor has worked back into the cyanotype. Cherry blossoms and anemone forms scatter through the mid-ground in soft blue and blush. At the upper left, a Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) — North America's largest silk moth, named for the eyespots on its hindwings that mimic the eye of the Cyclops — completes the composition. This is a cyanotype collage with watercolor and digital enhancement. The blue tones and botanical shadows were made by exposing plant material directly onto sensitized paper using UV light — a photographic process developed in 1842. Printed cyanotype elements were cut and layered onto a textured ground; watercolor returned warmth and color to the botanical forms; the moth was added digitally. A print of a mixed-media original spanning nearly two centuries of image-making technology. Limited edition of 500.
