The Fig and the Wasp
by Blue Myers
The Fig and the Wasp celebrates one of nature's most extraordinary partnerships. Created using the historic cyanotype process, a fig branch was placed directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposed to ultraviolet light, preserving its graceful form in the rich Prussian blue of one of photography's earliest printing techniques. Watercolor brings the ripening fig to life, while a fig wasp—the tree's tiny, indispensable pollinator—completes the composition. For more than 80 million years, figs and fig wasps have evolved together in one of the natural world's most remarkable examples of mutualism. Each depends entirely upon the other: the wasp pollinates the hidden flowers contained within the fig, while the fig provides the only place where the wasp can reproduce. Neither species could survive without the other. The Fig and the Wasp reveals the beauty hidden within this ancient relationship, reminding us that some of nature's greatest stories are carried by its smallest creatures.
