Drifters of the Inland Sea
by Blue Myers
A cyanotype created from a specimen of sargassum seaweed collected on a beach along Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound. The intricate branching structure and delicate air bladders appear suspended against a deep Prussian blue background, revealing the remarkable architecture of a species that has traveled far beyond its native waters. Sargassum, a brown alga originally from Japan, arrived on the Pacific Coast in the early twentieth century, likely transported with imported oysters. Its numerous buoyant floats help keep the plant upright in the water, allowing it to capture sunlight and thrive in the dynamic environment between land and sea. The cyanotype process, one of the earliest photographic printing techniques, uses ultraviolet light to create an image directly from the specimen itself. Part natural history record and part artistic interpretation, the work considers the journeys of species across oceans and the resilience of life in changing environments.
