The Gorget
by Blue Myers
An Anna's Hummingbird in flight, rendered as a collage against layered blue atmospherics — mountain forms dissolving into cloud, cyanotype flowers resting below. The throat patch, or gorget, is built from pressed seaweed collected from Vashon Island beaches: branching red algae that reads, at a glance, as the iridescent magenta-crimson of a living hummingbird in full sun. Cyanotype is a historical photographic printing process that uses UV light to expose plant material directly onto coated paper, producing its distinctive blue tone. Each print is unique and made entirely by hand. This piece combines cyanotype with collage — the seaweed gathered from the Puget Sound intertidal zone is a direct material from the same Pacific Northwest ecosystem the bird inhabits. Limited edition of 500.
