Midsummer
by Blue Myers
A wide-format collage built from Vashon Island and regional botanical material: dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), clover, ivy, grass, and pressed yucca flowers (Yucca sp.), with two bumblebee silhouettes cut from deep-exposed cyanotype paper. Some plant material rests physically on the surface; others print as white photograms against Prussian blue. The pressed yucca blooms flatten into star forms under UV exposure. The bees move through the composition mid-flight above their forage plants. Cyanotype is a photographic process developed in 1842 that uses UV light to record organic forms in direct contact with coated paper. This piece is cyanotype collage: printed paper is cut and layered with collected materials, building depth through shadow, silhouette, and direct contact.
