Understory
by Blue Myers
A forest floor in layers: cyanotype-printed ferns, Solomon's seal (Polygonatum sp.), clover, and yarrow collaged against pressed autumn leaves and a warm watercolor ground. At center, a Pacific Sideband snail (Monadenia fidelis) — native to moist coastal forests from BC to northern California. Land snails are sensitive to soil chemistry and moisture; their presence indicates a functioning understory. Solomon's seal grows in exactly these conditions: shade, damp soil, leaf matter. This piece records a specific ecological community, not a generic forest floor. This is a cyanotype collage with watercolor and digital composition, beginning with UV-light printing of plant material directly onto sensitized paper — a process from 1842 — and extending through hand collage and digital finishing. A print of a mixed-media original spanning nearly two centuries of image-making technology. Limited edition of 500.
