Guardians
by Blue Myers
The White-lined Sphinx Moth (Hyles lineata) is one of the most widely distributed hawk moths in North America — a fast, hovering pollinator that feeds at dusk, working the night shift that bees and butterflies leave behind. Major players in pollination networks, they move under cover of darkness, reaching flowers too deep or too fleeting for day-active insects. The moth takes its name from its larva, which rears up in a rigid, sphinx-like pose when threatened — connecting it to the mythological Sphinx, guardian of thresholds. Two appear here, moving through a blue field of botanicals. Cyanotype is a historical photographic printing process that uses UV light to expose plant material directly onto coated paper. This piece combines cyanotype collage with digital finishing — a composition that spans nearly two centuries of image-making technology. Limited edition of 500.
