Sea Script
by Blue Myers
Sea Script is a hand-pulled cyanotype created from Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii, a red seaweed collected along the shores of Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound. Exposed directly onto light-sensitive paper using ultraviolet light, the specimen records its own delicate form in the distinctive Prussian blue of the historic cyanotype process, creating a unique print without the use of a camera or negative. Growing on rocky shorelines in the lower intertidal, Sarcodiotheca is shaped by the daily rhythm of tides. Its graceful branching structure flexes with currents, helping create habitat for small marine invertebrates while contributing to the rich biodiversity of the nearshore ecosystem. Reduced to its essential form, the seaweed becomes a graceful calligraphy written by the sea itself. Sea Script invites viewers to slow down and appreciate the quiet beauty of organisms that often go unnoticed beneath the tide.
