Tori Gagne’s fine art horse photographs are a masterclass in wildlife photography. Behind each photograph are layers of narratives, the first of the wild horses she captures roaming across the American West, the following of the journey, creativity, and technical skillsets required to immortalize an animal’s impermanence in its natural habitat.
With such a captivating subject matter and career we found ourselves chomping at the bit to reach out to Gagne to learn more about her work and journey as a photographer.

Your love for photography started at an early age. How have you adapted to the technical changes in the field of photography throughout your career?
Photography has undergone tremendous evolution, from film to digital and into advanced editing tools and printing techniques. As a lifelong learner, I’ve embraced each new development as an opportunity to grow. I continuously seek out new ideas, learn emerging software, and adapt to advancements in camera technology. I make handmade prints on occasion using cyanotype or interesting papers and gold leaf to keep my hands involved in the work. Staying curious and open to innovation has allowed me to refine my craft while staying true to the timeless principles of light, composition, and storytelling.

Family is a big part of your artistic beginnings. What about your mother and brother’s careers inspired you to pick up a camera?
Seeing through their artistic eyes and witnessing their natural abilities helped me become comfortable exploring my own artistic capabilities. Their passion and skill encouraged me to embrace creativity and ultimately gave me the confidence to follow my own path in photography.

How did you settle on wild horse fine art photography?
Over 12 years ago, I began learning about wild horses and the challenges they face, which sparked a deep fascination and connection with their spirit. Owning a horse profoundly deepened my appreciation for these incredible animals and their unique qualities. These experiences together led me down a path of discovery and advocacy. Wild horses embody freedom, resilience, and an indomitable spirit, and bring a sense of awe that is lacking in our society. Observing them in their natural environments is both humbling and magical. Through my art, I aim to celebrate their existence, advocate for their protection, and ensure their legacy endures.

What’s something unexpected about photographing horses compared to other subject matters?
Horses live entirely in the moment, which means I must be fully present and attuned to their energy. Their sensitivity to emotions requires a calm and centered approach to build trust and create a connection. Unlike static subjects, their movements can be unpredictable, demanding a blend of patience, timing, and intuition. The greatest reward comes when I capture their true essence—their strength, wisdom, and spirit—in a way that feels almost magical and deeply fulfilling.

What do you hope for your viewer to experience when viewing your image?
I want viewers to feel a sense of awe and connection. My goal is to convey the wildness, freedom, and spirit of horses while offering a moment of introspection about the bond between humans and these incredible animals. I hope my work inspires gratitude for the natural world and a commitment to preserving its beauty.
Do you have any favorite locations to shoot at?
High desert landscapes across the western United States provide stunning backdrops that highlight the majesty of these animals. The vast, silent spaces create the perfect environment for capturing their beauty and spirit, allowing their natural grace and freedom to shine.

What’s one of the proudest moments in your career to date?
When I look back, there are so many moments that stand out: from my first show to my first gallery, my first print sale, my first award, and my first magazine article. Each milestone has been meaningful in its own way. I think it’s the culmination of all these moments, combined with persistence and dedication, that fills me with pride—especially in the face of a highly competitive and challenging art market.
