Frenzied Suspension
by Lindsey Kiser
Is there anything more delightful than a flower garden visited by a growing population of ruby-throated hummingbirds? What brings your heart gladness? What sparks joy? For the artist, hummingbirds are enchanting in a way other songbirds just aren’t. Hummingbirds always appear frenzied and frantic, but every now and then, one will be suspended in a static state of hum near their intended target, whether a blossom or a feeder. At that breathless moment, the feathers can almost be counted. In an instant, it is a whir of color streaking through the yard to the next object of attention. Collect Frenzied Suspension as a reminder to slow down and take a breath to observe the beauty in the moment that is right now. Lindsey used multiple reference photos to create the balance you see in this composition. The scratchboard was scratched with a sharpened sewing needle held in a pen vice to reveal the white clay under the black layer. Next, she applied colorful inks.
