Tidewritten
by Blue Myers
Created from a specimen of Sarcodiotheca collected along the shores of Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound, Tidewritten captures the delicate architecture of a marine alga shaped by the forces of tide, current, and season. Through the historic cyanotype process, the seaweed's branching form emerges in luminous white against a deep ocean-blue field, preserving a fleeting moment from the intertidal landscape. The specimen's intricate structure radiates outward like a watershed, a network of rivers, or the branching pathways of roots and nerves. Its form speaks to the interconnectedness of natural systems, where individual organisms are woven into larger ecological relationships linking land, sea, and sky. This cyanotype serves as both scientific observation and artistic meditation. The image honors the rich biodiversity of Puget Sound and the quiet beauty often overlooked along the wrack line—the boundary where ocean and shore meet.
