Ocean Currents
by Blue Myers
Ocean Currents is a hand-pulled cyanotype created from Sargassum muticum (Japanese wireweed) collected along the shores of Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound. Using the historic cyanotype process, the seaweed was placed directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposed to ultraviolet light, allowing sunlight to preserve its intricate branching form in the distinctive Prussian blue of one of photography's earliest printing techniques. Originally native to Japan, Sargassum muticum arrived on the Pacific Coast in the early twentieth century, transported with imported oysters. Today it is a familiar presence along Washington's shorelines, where its buoyant fronds sway with the tides, creating habitat for juvenile fish, crabs, and countless marine invertebrates while illustrating the complex story of ecological adaptation. Ocean Currents invites viewers to reflect on the beauty and resilience of the marine world, where every tide carries both history and change.
