We’ve attended our fair share of conferences and meet-ups tailored to those who want to grow their Instagram following, amp up digital marketing, and gain more skills as savvy entrepreneurs in their respective fields.
So, when we were approached by Aaron Hicklin of celebrated bookstore One Grand Books about partnering up to frame artwork for the Deep Water Literary Festival, billed as “a magical three-day festival for people who love books, and the writers that inspire them,” we thought, “Well, this is refreshing!” And then, when we saw the lineup of artists whose works we’d be framing, we knew we had to take part in the project.

This year’s fest was themed as a fairy tale extravaganza based on the stories collected by the Brothers Grimm and 20th century interpretations of the tales. At the forefront of the festivities was a marathon 12-hour reading based on the updated version of Grimm’s famous tales by author Philip Pullman.
A diverse lineup of local and nationally renowned artists—including everything from dance collectives to neon artists to musicians to illustrators—all contributed to bringing a rich weekend of cultural experience to the rural community of Narrowsburg, NY, a small town at the deepest point of the Delaware river in the Sullivan Catskills.

As part of the festival’s mission of involving the local community in the event, Students at Sullivan West High School penned original fairy tales for The Fairy Tale Project, which were then shown alongside works created for the stories by acclaimed New Yorker illustrators Jorge Colombo, Liana Finck, Marcellus Hall, and Emily Flake, as well as such leading illustrators as John Kascht, Carolina Moscoso, Bráulio Amado, Richard Haines, Thomas Allen, and Sego. All pieces were framed in our Black Gallery Frames and auctioned off following the event, with proceeds going to both Sullivan High School and supporting the festival.
