Popping Up With MoMA!

Sometimes, opportunities are the stuff that dreams are made of. This is one of those times. This Fall, we were beyond excited when we heard from MoMA Design Store—yes, of The Museum of Modern Art—that they were in the early stages of planning a Print Shop Pop-Up at the Soho, New York location. And we were even more excited when they selected Simply Framed as the framing partner for the Pop-Up.

The Print Shop, opening to the public on February 21st and running through March 25th, will feature over 100 hard-to-find posters from global institutions and cultural events. The assortment will include artwork by artists in the Museum’s collection and a selection of prints from Kayrock Screenprinting, a fine art printer based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

The recent MoMA Design Store Press Preview in NYC announced The Print Shop Pop-Up, featuring a Bob Dylan poster by Milton Glaser, and posters with artwork by Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Indiana, artists in MoMA’s collection, alongside FreshPrints! by Mark Wagner, Chris Johanson, and Lara Schnitger from Kayrock Screenprinting. All posters custom framed by Simply Framed in our Natural, White, and Black Gallery frames.

Where there are posters, there are frames—and that’s where we come in. Simply Framed will be on-site offering our convenient framing services to anyone who purchases a poster at the Pop-Up. We’ll help visitors choose the perfect frame and mat style for their poster, send it in for custom framing, and ship the finished product directly to their (or their giftee’s) doorstep. Visitors will also be able to leverage Simply Framed’s services to custom frame their own personal pieces throughout the duration of the Pop-Up. They can also shop our frame collections from iPads in the Pop-Up—or their own phones—and upload photos for Print & Frame with our help.

The Pop-Up was inspired by The Museum of Modern Art’s long history of collecting and producing posters, which began shortly after the Museum’s opening in 1929. Sourced from galleries and institutions from around the globe, the posters in the Pop-Up will highlight the very best examples of poster design available today.

Visitors will be able to view and purchase reproductions of artworks by over 50 MoMA Collection artists among the likes of Ellsworth Kelly, Yayoi Kusama, Cindy Sherman, and Cy Twombly. The assortment will also feature select works by acclaimed graphic design legend and MoMA collection artist Milton Glaser. Ranging from 1967 to 2009, the selection of Glaser posters features designs for exhibitions, concerts, festivals, advertisements, social awareness campaigns, and albums.

As part of The Print Shop, Kayrock Screenprinting will debut new poster designs. Owned by Karl LaRocca, an artist in MoMA’s collection, Kayrock has been collaborating with emerging and mid-career artists since 1998. The Pop-Up will also showcase 20 signed and numbered limited edition posters from Kayrock’s Fresh Prints! Collection by artists such as Chris Johansen, Mary Wagner, and LaRocca himself. Visitors to the Pop-Up will also be able to get a glimpse into the traditional screen printing techniques Kayrock uses, with a screen printer on-site and activations of special edition prints over the course of the installation.

And there’s more! Throughout the course of the Pop-Up, we’ll be hosting an ongoing event series featuring inspiring talks from designers and tastemakers (details to come!). And if you don’t live in NYC, don’t worry; we’ll be covering all the fun stuff that happens at 81 Spring Street right here on the blog and on our Instagram, so stay tuned.

On a personal note: We couldn’t be any more thrilled to return to the city where Dara first conceptualized the idea for Simply Framed—schlepping her small art collection around the streets of Tribeca and Soho—and be the modern-day framer that she was searching for then. Both Dara and Daisy will be on site, along with an amazing team of Simply Framed Ambassadors. We hope we’ll see you there!

P.S. Do you live in NYC and want to be part of our Pop-Up fun? We’re hiring.
